Alex de Minaur v Marco Cecchinato Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players and both have won three apiece. Rather interestingly, they have played each other thrice on clay and Cecchinato has won all three times.

de Minaur 2-2 on Clay This Year

That de Minaur doesn’t quite playing on clay is quite evident from his overall record on this surface. As compared to his win percentage of 60% on grass and 63% in hardcourt competitions, the Aussie has won just 17 out of the 41 matches he’s played in clay court tournaments.

This year, he made the quarterfinal at the Barcelona Open, while he was knocked out in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters – the two tournaments he played on dirt.

Which is why coming into a match against a player who not only relishes playing on this surface but has also beaten the Aussie every time they have played on it, makes it so much more difficult for de Minaur.

Add to that de Minaur’s record record which has him win just two of his previous six matches and he could be looking at a difficult second round encounter here.

Cecchinato Shocks Fucsovics

Once a top-20 player, Cecchinato has fallen to 85th in the world and needed to make it through the qualifiers to enter the main draw.

And he drew Marton Fucsovics in his opener, going in as a 6/4 underdog against his opponent. Which is why it was even more surprising to see Cecchinato come through in straight sets to set up a second round meeting with de Minaur.

In a match lasting an hour and 42 minutes, Cecchinato carved out a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Fucsovics.

Down 0-2 in the first set, Cecchinato fought back to level terms and then eased his way to a win in the tie-breaker that followed. Emboldened by this start, Cecchinato then broke Fucsovics in the opening game of the second set before wrapping up the match with a second break of serve at 3-5.

Can he do something similar against de Minaur.

de Minaur v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

Sure, de Minaur is a superior player to what he was the last few times these two played on clay but Cecchinato still has enough tricks up his sleeve on this surface. Which is why, a tad surprised with 7/20 odds here for de Minaur’s win. We think it would be a lot closer than that.
