Veronika Kudermetova v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. Both came last year with Potapova winning on clay in Istanbul.

Kudermetova Finally Breaks Losing Streak

It’s not been much of a season to remember for Kudermetova who had entered this tournament on the back of four successive defeats. That included two consecutive losses on clay with Kudermetova having not won any match on it so far.

And with Kudermetova not excelling on clay as much as she does in hardcourt competitions otherwise too, it wasn’t a surprise she was taken to three sets by Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. In the end, Kudermetova would be relieved she managed to finally break her losing streak but it took her nearly two and a half hours to do that.

Parrizas-Diaz lost her serve three in the first set but came back to level the proceedings with a crucial break of serve in the ninth game of the second. In the final set though, Kudermetova went 4-0 ahead and while she lost her serve once after that, she completed a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win

Kudermetova will now have to do a lot better in round three though as she takes on a player who has been in the form of her life and doesn’t mind playing on clay either.

Potapova Comes Through against Cristian

The in-form Potapova had to huff and puff in her second round win over Jaqueline Cristian but she finally managed to get past her opponent to seal her third round berth.

Having never won a main draw match at the Madrid Open before this, the Stuttgart Open semifinalist Potapova was a huge favourite coming into this match.

Very early in the encounter, however, it became evident things wouldn’t be that simple. Despite breaking Cristian twice and taking a 5-2 lead, Potapova failed to close out the opening set as she lost her serve twice in a row.

Another Cristian serve was broken and while Potapova faced another break-point she managed to hold on to hers and clinched the opening set.

The second set saw Potapova twice take the lead with a service break, only for her to drop her own serve in the very next game. But when her opponent broke Potapova in the eighth game, she held on to her serve to level things out.

In the decider, it was Potapova who dropped her serve the first time but this time around she rallied to break her opponent three times in a row before closing it out off her fifth match-point.

Interestingly, Potapova starts off a favourite here.

Kudermetova v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Given the two players’ form, it is no surprise that Potapova starts a favourite here. Backing her to win too.
