Jessica Pegula v Marie Bouzkova Head to Head

Bouzkova leads the rivalry 3-1. Pegula’s only win came at the U.S. Open in 2020, while Bouzkova won their most recent battle at Indian Wells last year.

Pegula Holds of Frech

Last year’s finalist Jessica Pegula began her 2023 Madrid Open campaign with a solid second round victory over Polish qualifier Magdalena Frech.

The world no. 3 was given a tough fight by the world no. 100 in the first set, but once the American took the first set tiebreak, she took charge of the match. Pegula raced to a 5-1 lead in the second set, bur Frech pulled a break back. However, Pegula did not err again in the contest and sealed a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory.

Pegula, who was beaten by Ons Jabeur in the final last year, has come into this year’s tournament in terrific form. She was 24-7 before the start of the Madrid Open and that included a runner-up finish in Doha and runs to the semifinals in Dubai, Miami and Charleston. She was also a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and helped Team USA to win the inaugural United Cup, by finishing with a 4-1 record in the tournament.

Pegula is a dangerous player on clay and had an 11-4 record on the surface last year. This year she is 4-1, but that record should improve in Madrid as the third seed is eyeing a deep run once again.

Bouzkova Edges Past Sasnovich

Marie Bouzkova had come into the tournament with a woeful 4-9 record at the tour level this year. But she will be feeling nice after winning a tough three set second round contest on Friday.

The 29th seed, who had a first round bye, came back from 0-3 down to take the opening set. Sasnovich however clawed her way back into the match by winning the second set in the tiebreak.

In the deciding set, Bouzkova got an early break but the advantage was soon lost as the Belarusian broke back to send the match back on serve. But Bouzkova responded with an immediate break and secured a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 victory.

Bouzkova had made it to the round of 16 last year. Can she do it for the second year in a row by taking down the third seed?

Pegula v Bouzkova Prediction and Tip

Bouzkova has dominated the rivalry but still Pegula will be the favourite to win the contest and close the gap on the Czech player. Both players have been in contrasting forms this year: While Pegula has won matches consistently, Bouzkova has lost more often. So all factors are favouring Pegula in the contest. Can she live up to the expectations?
