Bernabe Zapata Miralles v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

Bernabe Zapata Miralles continued his strong clay court form of the season as the Spaniard knocked out Daniel Evans in the second round of the Madrid Open on  Saturday.

The world no. 42, who is making his first main draw appearance in Madrid, dominated the contest from start to finish to defeat the 19th seed 6-3, 6-2.

Zapata Miralles did not face a single break point in the match, while he broke Evans once in the opening set and twice in the second to score the win in an hour and 20 minutes.

The Spaniard, who reached his first two ATP semifinals in Buenos Aires and Rio this year, had begun his Madrid Open campaign with a stunning come-from-behind win over Mackenzie McDonald in the first round. Zapata Miralles had saved two match points in the final set before wrapping up the contest in the deciding set tiebreak.

Zapata Miralles is now 12-11 overall and 12-6 on clay this year. He is looking in fine touch in the tournament and will be eager to keep the momentum going in the third round.

Safiullin Dumps Out the 14th Seed

Roman Safiullin had come to Madrid with a 1-6 record in the main draw at the tour level this season. The Russian has however won two in two in Madrid and is getting better with every match.

The world no. 112 knocked out the 14th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets in the second round on Saturday. Safiullin won 82% points on the back of his first serve. He converted 1of 4 break points and saved the both that he faced to score a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over the American.

The Russian had qualified for the main draw with straight set wins over João Sousa and Sebastian Ofner in the qualifying rounds. He then ousted Nicolás Jarry in three sets in the opening round.

Safiullin, who won his fourth Challenger title in Koblenz this year, had come into the tournament with a 0-2 record in Masters 1000 tournaments. Having claimed his first two Masters victories, the 25-year-old will be looking to add more wins at this level in the second week in Madrid.

Zapata Miralles has been brilliant on clay this year and he keeps growing in confidence with every match. He is a better clay court player than Safiullin and will be the favourite to advance to the round of 16.
