Fritz Wins Tough Opener
No. 8 seed Taylor Fritz opened his Madrid Open campaign with a tough second round win over Christopher O’Connell.
Fritz saved two set points in the first set tiebreak, while he converted a seventh set point in the tiebreak and an eighth overall in the set to take a one-set-to-love lead.
In the second set, the world no. 10 got an early break and then protected the lead through the end of the match to beat the world on. 81 Australian 7-6 (13-11), 6-4.
This is Fritz’s third main draw appearance in Madrid and it is the first time he has made it to the third round. He is in excellent form this year and has reached the semifinals in both his previous clay court tournaments in Monte-Carlo and Munich but failed to make the final in either of them.
Overall, Fritz has a 2708 season record, which includes a title in Delray Beach in addition to four semifinal finishes.
Fritz will be eager to make a deep run in the tournament.
Garin Battles Past Kecmanovic
World no. 73 Cristian Garin is back playing some good tennis on his favourite surface. After back-to-back quarterfinal finishes in Houston and Munich, Garin is off to a great start in Madrid.
He knocked out Marc-Andrea Huesler in straight sets in the first round and then added another win in the second round, battling past 27th seed Miomir Kecmanovic in a dramatic three-setter.
Garin saved two set points in the 10th game of the first set before winning the set in the tiebreak. The world no. 33 Kecmanovic, however, bounced back in the second set by edging the tiebreak.
In the final set, Garin got a solitary break in the seventh game before completing a 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 victory in two hours and 45 minutes.
Garin is 21-10 across levels this year and that includes an 8-5 record on clay. This is the third time he is playing in Madrid. His best was a quarterfinal finish in 2021.
Fritz v Garin Prediction and Tip
While Garin is slowly regaining his form, it will still be a huge ask to beat the world no. 10 in the third round. Fritz is playing some brilliant tennis this season and has reached at least the quarterfinals in his last seven tournaments. Expect a good contest with Fritz edging past the Chilean.
Tips:
- Tip 1: Fritz to win: 4/9
- Tip 2: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
