Bianca Andreescu shrugged off five double-faults to register an easy fourth round win over Wang Qiang in the 2019 WTA Indian Wells Open on Tuesday.
The Canadian world number 60, a wild-card entrant into the tournament, won 7-5, 6-2 to advance to become the first player this year to reach the quarter-final in what is her first ever appearance at the Indian Wells Open.
Andreescu had earlier sent the Dominika Cibulkova packing in the second round before defeating Stefanie Voegele in the third.
And with this win Andreescu also improves her win-loss record in the year to a dazzling 25-3, having won the WTA Newport Open earlier after being a finalist at the Auckland Open. In fact, at the WTA Auckland she had had to qualify for the event with three pre-main draw victories and then won four more matches before falling at the final hurdle to Julia Goerges.
She also makes it to the top 50 of the WTA Rankings as a result of this victory.

And in this match, Andreescu’s class stood out in with her points won on her first serve standing at a whopping 82% as opposed to just 56% for Wang Qiang. Qiang, the 18th seed, had earlier shown her own pedigree with a win over the 16th seeded Elise Mertens but couldn’t withstand the force of Andreescu in this one.
Andreescu won four breaks of serve to Qiang’s solitary one in the first set, and that’s where the difference between the two players lay.
She will now take on the winner of the Garbine Muguruza versus Kiki Bertens match which had gone into the third set at the time of writing.
