Kenin Showing Modest Returns for the Season

A former Grand Slam winner and a runner-up on the clay courts of Roland-Garros, Kenin has barely scratched the surface with her performances this season.

Overall, she holds a 9-10 win-loss record for 2023 while on clay, Kenin has played two tournaments and won just a solitary match. What would have been annoying for Kenin is that her defeats haven’t come to big-ticket players which sometimes is the case because of an unfortunate draw.

At the Charleston Open, Kenin fell in the second round to Irina Camelia Begu while in Madrid, despite starting out a 1/2 favourite, she lost to Maryna Zanevska in straight sets.

These three matches she played were her first since 2021 so it might well be a case of getting back in touch in some form in the lead-up to the French Open. Can she start things off in Rome by emulating her performances here in her last two appearances?

Bucsa at Career-Best Despite Opening Madrid Loss

Bucsa has had her moments on clay at the lower level but here on the WTA circuit this season, she would have liked to do a lot better.

Having reached a career-best ranking of 66th in the world, Bucsa lost in the second round at both, the Charleston Open and Stuttgart Open. And at the Madrid Open two weeks ago, Bucsa was sent packing by Rebeka Masarova in the very first round.

The good news for Bucsa is her overall form this season has been good enough to help her gain a direct entry into this competition. This follows Bucsa’s qualifier route to make the Australian Open main draw where she then overcame Bianca Andreescu en route the third round.

She will now hope to take advantage of Kenin’s poor form on clay and proceed to the second round where the challenge of the Madrid Open winner Aryna Sabalenka awaits.

Kenin v Bucsa Prediction and Tip

Kenin might be a favourite on paper but we think Bucsa will have her chances to make it difficult for her American opponent. A three-setter in the offing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in first set: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
