Ugo Humbert v Emil Ruusuvouri Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, both times on clay, and the Finn has won each time. He won in five sets at the French Open in 2022, and in straight sets in the first round of the Madrid Open two weeks ago.

Humbert Has Just Won a Challenger Title

Humbert’s world ranking has fluctuated over the past few years, but he is a player on the rise again after third round appearances at the Australian Open and at Indian Wells.

His clay court season, though, did not get off to the best of starts.

Forced to qualify in Monte Carlo, he suffered a first round loss to the Italian Lorenzo Sonego, going down in three sets.

And that was followed by successive first round defeats in Munich and Madrid, where his conqueror was Ruusuvouri.

However, he has played himself into form subsequently by entering the Challenger event in Cagliari, which he subsequently won, beating the Serb Laslo Djere in the final after a three set battle.

That was his eighth Challenger title of his career, but his first on clay.

This is only the second time that Ruusuvouri will play in Rome, He was beaten in the second round last year.

However, he returns to Italy with an extra spring in his step having earlier this year broken into the top 40 for the first time in his career by reaching the quarter-finals of the Miami Open,

So far, though, he has enjoyed mixed results on clay.

Forced to qualify in Monte Carlo, he was beaten in the first round by the Czech, Jiri Lehecka. He had better fortunes in Barcelona, where he beat both Alexander Bublik and Frances Tiafoe, before succumbing to the Spaniard, Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina.

In Madrid, after seeing over the challenge of Humbert, he had the misfortune of meeting the world number two and eventual winner, Carlos Alcaraz in the second round. He lost, but, at least, he had the satisfaction of taking a set off the Spaniard.
