Jaume Munar v Thanasi Kokkinakis Head to Head
They had met recently at the Madrid Masters and that first round match was won by Munar but he needed two tie-breakers to come through.

Munar Misses Golden Chance to Make Madrid Quarters
Having not done too much of note in the tournaments preceding the Madrid Masters, not much was expected from Munar in that tournament. Which is why, despite not facing too many bigwigs on clay, he started out as a second favourite in two of the three matches in Madrid and was only a 4/5 favourite against a third.
Munar looked to have found his rhythm though.
He overcame Thanasi Kokkinakis in two tie-breakers in his Madrid Masters opener, then won the first set before his second round opponent Tallon Griekspoor retired from the match.
And when he beat Matteo Arnaldi from being a set down in the third round and set up a round of 16 clash with Daniel Altmaier, it looked like he was finally realising his potential on the red dirt.
Instead he fell to Altmaier in what turned out to be a surprise defeat.
Still, he enters Rome with an air of knowing he can make it count on the court.

Kokkinakis Eases Through the Rome Qualifiers
After having lost to Munar in the first round of the Madrid Masters, Kokkinakis participated in the Cagliari Challenger to get used to some of the Italian clay and did well to make the quarterfinals there.
Kokkinakis fell to Laslo Djere in the last eight but not before he had shaved a set off his opponent. Two days later he was in Rome, playing the qualifiers of this tournament.
And again, it wasn’t too long before the Aussie made it through to the main draw.
The 104th-ranked player overcame Matteo Gigante and Jan Choinski, as one would have expected him to do, to enter round one of this tournament for the first time.
Kokkinakis might not be at his most comfortable on clay but he has shown he is ready to put up a fighting display every sense of the way. We might see that again here.
Munar v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip
Not much to choose between the two and we think we could see a keen, three-setter here.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 4/9
- Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
