Nicolas Jarry v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head
Two previous matches, both on clay, have led to wins for Jarry but those victories have not been straightforward. Their last match came in Santiago earlier this year where Jarry was taken to a third set.

With the kind of form that Jarry had on clay all season, it wasn’t much of a surprise that he went into his opening round match at the Madrid Masters against Roman Safiullin as a huge favourite.
What was surprising was that the Santiago Open winner this season fell away in three sets, showing traces of fatigue as he crashed to a three-set defeat to his Russian opponent.
Jarry had earlier made the third round at the Monte-Carlo Masters as well after registering wins over Borna Coric and Alexei Popyrin but then fell in the second round at Barcelona. At the latter, he lost to another Russian, Karen Khachanov.
What needs to now be seen is if the two week gap between his last match and here has been enough to recharge Jarry’s batteries as he looks to build on his 13-6 win-loss record on clay.

By the end of February this year, Hanfmann’s ranking had dipped to outside the top 150 and as he struggled to string wins together.
The start of the new month brought new luck for Hanfmann as he came through the qualifiers of the Santiago Open and made it to the quarterfinals with wins over Pedro Martinez and Roberto Carballes Baena.
At Houston, in what was the next tournament he played on clay, Hanfmann ploughed through the qualifying rounds yet again before entering the semifinal. And in Munich and Madrid that followed, Hanfmann has entered the second and third round respectively.
He now faces a player who had ended his run at the aforementioned Santiago Open but this time around he will be a lot more confident. Expect him to put up a bigger fight here.
