Cornet and Martincova have never faced off before this.

2008 Finalist Cornet Has Struggled Thereafter

Featuring in her first ever edition of the Italian Open way back in 2008, Cornet made it to the main draw of this tournament through the qualifiers and then won four matches in a row to make it to the final.

Since then, Cornet has featured in 10 more editions of this tournament but managed to win a mere four further matches.

Yep, four in one tournament and four more over 10 seasons!

And while Cornet would have loved her initial performances on clay, she has struggled to get going in more recent times on this surface. This year itself, for instance. Cornet has made the second round at both, the Charleston Open and the Madrid Open but lost those matches.

And then featuring in the WTA 125 competition in Reus, Cornet did not last longer than her opening match.

Which is why, despite playing a qualifier here, Cornet will hope it doesn’t turn out to be a banana peel.

Martincova Scrapes Through the Qualifiers

Following a couple of poor results on clay, as Martincova failed to qualify for the Madrid Open and then lost in the first round of the WTA 125 tournament in Saint-Malo, she has managed to turn things around at the qualifiers here.

First up, Martincova needed two tie-breakers to overcome Jaimie Fourlis in the opening qualifier before edging past Ana Konjuh in a three-setter in the second.

In doing so, Martincova made it to the main draw for the second year in a row but she has never won a match here before. In fact, Martincova is yet to win an encounter in a WTA 1000 event on clay in her career.

Add that to the fact that only once has Martincova made the second round at the French Open as well, she could be looking at a difficult opening round encounter here.

Cornet v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Cornet will start a favourite and while her form has been a tad iffy, we will be backing here to win this. Probably in two too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cornet to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
