Marie Bouzkova will be disappointed with a 5-10 season record on the tour this year. The Czech player has not won consecutive matches on the tour this year and has an overall record of 9-12 across levels.
She reached her first quarterfinal of the year a t an ITF event in Oeiras, Portugal last week, but the world no. 38 failed to go beyond that stage.
There were huge expectations from Bouzkova following a 42-14 run across levels last year. But she has just not got going this year.
Can she begin turning things around in Rome? It will be a huge ask as clay has been the least favoured surface for her over her career. She has not only played little on the surface but has also found little success when compared to other surfaces.
She may fancy her chances against McNally but making a deep run can be challenging.

Caty McNally was off to a flying start in Rome as she handed local hope Dalila Spiteri a straight sets shellacking in the first round on Tuesday.
The American., ranked no. 62 in the world, won eight consecutive games before the world no. 508 finally got herself on the board but that was the only game that Spiteri won in the first round as McNally raced to a 6-0, 6-1 win in 60 minutes.
McNally won 80% points on the back of her first serve and won 62% of the total points in the match. While she saved the only break point she faced in the match, she converted 6 of the 15 that she held to score a comprehensive victory.
The win improved the 21-year-old to 10-9 across levels in 2023. McNally is 5-3 on clay after having reached the quarterfinal in the WTA 125 inn Reus last week. On the tour, her best was a run to the semifinals in Merida.
Having got off to a great start in her tournament debut in Rome, she will be aiming to build on the start but faces a more accomplished player in the next round.
Bouzkova v McNally Prediction and Tip
Despite Bouzkova’s struggles this year, she will be the favourite against McNally as she is the more experienced player and knows how to soak in the pressure in big tournaments. Bouzkova also has the better game and produced better results in the past than the American and that should allow her to prevail in the next round.
