Munich Finalist van de Zandschulp Hoping to Shrug off Madrid Showing

After having made a slow start to the clay court season following an opening defeat in Marrakesh and a second round loss in the Monte-Carlo Masters, van de Zandschulp looked to have come into his own in Munich.

The Dutchman defeated Aslan Karatsev, Marcos Giron and Taylor Fritz on his way to the final of that tournament before Holger Rune got the better of him.

Still, van de Zandschulp would have enjoyed his stay in the competition and entered the Madrid Masters feeling quite good about himself. A first round bye later, he faced Karatsev again and given his 6-2, 6-0 win the last time the two had met, there was not too much doubt who was the favourite.

Rather stunningly, not only did van de Zandschulp go down but he did so in a hurry against Karatsev. Almost like it’s difficult to predict what sort of form will van de Zandschulp display in a match on clay this season.

Which is why it remains to be seen whether he can overcome Djere here.

Djere Benefits from Lestienne Retirement

Known for his solidity on clay, Djere was a heavy favourite coming into his opening round match against Constant Lestienne. And he looked to be living up to those expectations rather well too, scooping up the first set with ease, 6-1.

At that stage though, Lestienne retired from the encounter because of fitness concerns, leaving Djere a winner in a mere 23 minutes.

This follows a first round exit at the Madrid Masters which came at the hands of, surprise surprise, Karatsev as well. Djere then opted to use the week between Madrid and Rome to feature in the Cagliari Challenger in Italy where he overcame Jozef Kovalik, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Ben Shelton to make the final.

The last two of those wins came from being a set down too.

So not only does Djere enjoy his time on clay but has also shown recent propensity to not give up too easily and that could prove to be rather difficult for his opponent.

van de Zandschulp v Djere Prediction and Tip

We will have to back Djere to win this close encounter given his recent form and the fact that he has shown he will look to fight till the very last point.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Djere to win: 5/6
  • Low Risk Tip: Over 5.5 breaks of serves in the match: 8/13
