Cerundolo Struggles Continue in Madrid

Cerundolo had climbed up to a career-best ranking of 24th thanks to his excellent performances on clay last year but it hasn’t been the same for him this season.

The Argentine has had a mixed bag so far in 2023 which includes a 7-7 win-loss record on the red dirt. Two weeks ago, this culminated in a rather insipid display of tennis from Cerundolo in his Madrid Masters opener against Pedro Cachin where he lost in straight sets.

Earlier, he had also bowed out of the Monte-Carlo Masters in the second round while winning and losing four matches apiece on the South American clay court circuit.

What Cerundolo needs is a repeat of the previous two seasons where he found himself getting a few wins in a row – including a title in Bastad 2022. Up against him is a player not well-versed with clay and this could be his chance to chug forward.

Yibing Stalls Losing Run

For starters Yibing had surprised a lot of fans with his title win at the Dallas win but he then followed it up with just two wins from the next six matches. More vitally, the Chinese player looked clueless on clay on occasions, winning just 10 games over two tournaments he played on this surface before Rome.

Which is why, coming up in the first round against the Frenchman Richard Gasquet, he was a whopping 21/10 second favourite.

And when he lost the first set, the writing looked to be on the wall with the match getting played to the script. Except that nobody gave Yibing that piece of paper.

The world number 57 fought back to win the next two sets, emerging victorious 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. In doing so he had also clinched his first ever career win on clay.

He now faces a far greater pedigreed player on clay but given his disposition to scrappiness, Yibing might not be a pushover.

Cerundolo v Yibing Prediction and Tip

Cerundolo gets our vote to win this but not before Yibing has driven him to multiple difficulties. Expect a three-setter even.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cerundolo to win: 3/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
