Khachanov Returns from Madrid Quarters
It was an excellent performance from Khachanov in both, the singles and doubles draw at the Madrid Masters as the Russian continued to enjoy resounding success for the season.
Khachanov combined with Andrey Rublev to win the doubles title but even in the singles competition, the Russian looked to have turned the corner. And he has not just done that on surfaces outside of clay but also on the red dirt.
Having climbed back up to 11th in the world, Khachanov overcame Thiago Monteiro, Robert Bautista Agut and Rublev himself in the singles competition to reach the quarterfinals at the Madrid Masters.
Eventually he fell to Carlos Alcaraz but even there, it wasn’t before he had given the Spaniard a bit of a fight in the second set.
With the kind of confidence under his belt, it seems very likely that the Russian will be looking at another deep run here following his round of 16 appearance here last season.

Barrere Surprises Nakashima
Brandon Nakashima was a 8/11 favourite coming into the opening round of the Rome Masters but Barrere had other ideas as he virtually toyed with his American opponent.
Barrere carved out a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nakashima in a match lasting a mere 68 minutes to march into the round two for the first time in his career.
In what turned out to be a one-sided encounter to the hilt, Barrere won 84% of his first serve points and did not face a single break-point in the entire match. On the other hand, the Frenchman broke Nakashima three times to ensure there was no looking back.
This was Barrere’s third clay court win of the season after having lost in the qualifying rounds of the Monte-Carlo Masters and then again in the first round of a Challenger tournament on the same surface last week.
He will know the challenge would be far greater against Khachanov here.
Khachanov v Barrere Prediction and Tip
Expecting Khachanov to clinch this in straight sets given his form and the quality of his opponent on clay.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Khachanov to win in straight sets: 1/2
- Moderate Risk Tip: Under 26.5 games in the match: 5/6
