Paul Breaks Clay Duck on the Challenger Circuit
Following his entry into the fourth round of the Miami Masters and his subsequent climb to his career-best ranking of 17th in the world, Paul was left with a task of continuing with the same momentum on clay as well.
Unfortunately for him, that did not quite pan out too well.
At the Houston Open in April, Paul was sent packing in the round of 16 by Yannick Hanfmann following an opening round bye. He then opted to participate at the Madrid Masters where again he did not have to play in the first round.
In the second, Paul was taken to the cleaners by Roman Safiullin, losing in straight sets again.
This is before Paul finally won his first match of the season on clay and that came on the Challenger circuit last week. The American marched into the final of the Aix en Provence Challenger tournament where he was finally defeated by Andy Murray.
That would give him some relief but now that he is back at the highest level on clay, the question is if he can turn his fortunes around here.

Garin Wins Three-Set Thriller
In a match between two evenly-placed clay-court specialists, Garin edged out Pedro Cachin in the first round to set up this meeting with Paul. Not surprisingly, Garin will start off as a favourite in this one given the difference in the pedigree on clay.
Garin was on court for two hours and 52 minutes as he frittered away two match-points in the final set before winning it. He scooped it up 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in a match where both players lost their respective serves thrice apiece.
This comes on the back of some consistent performances from Garin since the end of the South American clay court swing.
He has featured in five tournaments in this period – three of which have come on clay – and won successive matches in each one of them. This includes a fourth round appearance at the Indian Wells Masters after starting out as a qualifier and three successive bouts of consecutive wins on clay.
Can he make it four in a row by beating Paul here?
