Spaniard Looks to Build from Madrid

After a subdued start to his clay-court swing, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has certainly hit form at just the right time. He succumbed to an early exit in Monte Carlo where he lost 600 ranking points for being last year’s finalist.

But he’s certainly made up for those points that came off in Monaco by playing high-quality tennis in Barcelona and Madrid. In the former, he notched successive wins en route to the quarterfinals where he lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in an entertaining shot-making contest.

And in the latter, he scored his first top-10 win of the season when he upset Holger Rune in a late-night epic in the Spanish capital.

His Madrid campaign, however, ended at the round of 16 stage where he lost to Borna Coric in three sets. He’s sought momentum for the last four weeks, and he is now in a prime position to make serious inroads in Rome and then at the French Open.

Pella Tames Big-Serving Cressy

Guido Pella is still in the early stages of his comeback, but he could not be denied his fourth win of the season which came at the expense of big-serving Maxime Cressy.

The American is on his worst run of form on the ATP Tour having lost seven in a row coming to Rome. And even with Pella’s lack of match play, he couldn’t take advantage, with the Argentine using his experience and expertise on the clay to maximum effect.

Pella won 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 41 minutes. It was another day where Cressy’s second serve completely malfunctioned, serving six aces to 11 double faults.

Cressy landed just 49% of first serves and won a measly 37% of second-serve points. He was broken twice in the match and hammered 29 unforced errors to Pella’s 17.
