Hurkacz Not at His Best on Clay

While his overall record on clay isn’t the worst, Hurkacz hasn’t quite been himself on this surface this season.

The Polish number one, who was ranked ninth in the world in the not so recent past, has fallen to 15th on the charts now and that has been down to his recent form.

He enters this tournament in Rome on the back of a win-loss record of 3-3 on clay for the season, having lost in the opener at Estoril and having also fallen in the third round at the Madrid Masters.

Two of those three defeats came at the hands of Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Borna Coric, making it a little more difficult to digest for Hurkacz.

The good news for Hurkacz is that he takes on a player who has himself not been at his best in clay-court competitions, evening things out as a result.

Wolf Scrappy in Grenier Win

Only recently had Hugo Grenier featured in the third round of the Madrid Masters and was soundly beaten by Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-0. He then lost to Yannick Hanfmann in the qualifiers here but made it through as a lucky loser.

That was an indicator of Grenier’s overall quality – no surprises he is ranked 124th in the world.

For Wolf to then struggle to a 7-5, 7-5 win over Grenier in the first round was also an indicator about his own comfort level on clay.

Wolf was on court for an hour and 46 minutes, missed two set-points in the opening set at 5-4 before winning the set. In the second, he failed to get past his opponent’s serve till the 12th game where Grenier, serving at 5-6 to stay in the match was broken.

The American, who is 3-2 on clay this year, will need to do a lot better against Hurkacz.
