Xiyu Wang v Taylor Townsend Head to Head

It is 1-1 between the two ladies; they last met in the 2022 ITF Charleston Final, where Townsend won in straight sets.

Townsend Upsets Pegula

Doubles No. 6 Taylor Townsend just delivered the biggest win of her season by beating the American No. 1 Jessica Pegula 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The match lasted for a little under two hours and saw the unseeded qualifier carve the third-seed upset in style – winning 72% of the points behind the first serve.

The win puts her at 7-7 for the season – in addition to her best singles result of the year. This week, Taylor has dismissed the likes of Mirjam Bjorklund, Dalma Galfi, and Ysaline Bonaventure – an impressive feat given that it is just her first Italian Open in the singles draw.

Up until now, her previous best accomplishment was reaching round in Miami and the Australian Open.

However, the current #168 does make up for it in the doubles department. Townsend has had an exceptional season partnering with other stars on the tour.

The 27-year-old won the doubles event in Adelaide 1 and 2 and was the runner-up in the Miami Open.

Wang Upsets Begu

China’s Xiyu Wang dispatched the 31st seed Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 7-5 with a 78% first-service win rate.

The win was preceded by a 7-6(2), 7-6(2) win over Lucrezia Stefanini in the opener.

The 22-year-old, who is now the World No. 75, touched a career-high at the 49th spot in January. However, it did not help that she started the season with a three-match losing streak across Auckland, Melbourne, and Hua Hin.

Wang, who is now 7-9, had a breakthrough spell only in the Madrid Open, where she reached round three – after beating Varvara Gracheva and Bianca Andreescu in three sets. Before that, she had to settle for early exits in Mimia, Indian Wells, and Merida.

Xiyu has some clay pedigree to work with – whether it will be enough against the hard-hitting Townsend is anyone’s guess.

Wang v Townsend Prediction and Tip

Townsend is soaring high on confidence after beating Pegula and will stat as the favourite. The American is also an exceptional doubles player, and surely she can translate some of that into a good result against Wang. Expect an entertaining match.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Townsend to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
