Anna Bondar v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

They have never faced off at the highest level. In their only match on the ITF circuit, Zheng had defeated Bondar rather easily in 2021.

Bondar Continues Her Run

Here’s what Bondar had done this season before the start of this tournament. She had featured in 10 WTA competitions and one ITF tournament and won two main draw matches. Other than that, Bondar had failed to make it to the main draw of two WTA competitions.

Which is why, the once-50th-ranked Bondar is now struggling at 93rd in the world.

The reason why I speak of her performances before this tournament is to juxtapose is with what she has done in Rome.

Starting out as a qualifier, Bondar made the main draw with a couple of wins before stunning Tatjana Maria in straight sets in the opening round. But it was her win in the second round that stands out.

Bondar was 27/10 odds going into her match against Karolina Pliskova and finished off a straight-set winner over the former world number one.

She will now hope to make it a hattrick of wins for the first time since last September when she had done something similar in Budapest.

Zheng Eases Past Cornet

It’s been Zheng’s consistency across the entire season that has helped her grow as a player and pushed her close to breaking into the top 20 on the WTA charts.

And for the fifth tournament in a row, Zheng won her opening round match to set up this encounter against Bondar.

Zheng was quick off the blocks and while Alize Cornet did make it a lot tougher for her in the second set, the Chinese number one managed to finish it off in two sets. It did take her two hours and nine minutes though.

Cornet was broken early in the first set and while Zheng lost her serve in the sixth game, she broke right back and two times in a row. Another 3-1 lead followed for Zheng but Cornet retaliated yet again by levelling things out at 3-3.

The world number 21 had a match-point in the 12th game of the set but it would take her the tie-breaker to clinch it.

She will start off a heavy favourite here.

Bondar v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Zheng has shown she is more than capable of handling herself on clay and that is what believe she would do again here. Could take three sets to come through though.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Zheng to win: 1/4
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11
