Sofia Kenin v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings at the highest level between these players and Kenin has won both. Both those matches came earlier this season incidentally.

When Kenin edged out Cristina Bucsa in the first round of this competition to set up a second round meeting with the world number two Aryna Sabalenka, not too many would have given her a chance to make it through to the next stage.

Kenin didn’t look too perturbed though, as she needed just an hour and 39 minutes and only two sets to shock the tennis world with her win over the Madrid Open winner.

It started with Kenin breaking Sabalenka in the very first game of the opening set, losing her serve in the eighth game but then breaking back in the 11th to serve for it. Sabalenka is a seasoned pro and broke right back but Kenin showed her mettle and why she is a former French Open finalist by making it through the tie-breaker.

The second set went even better for Kenin who didn’t face a single break-point but broke Sabalenka’s serve on two occasions to march into the third 7-6 (4), 6-2.

While Kalinina wasn’t facing up to an opponent of the pedigree of Sabalenka, she did not have a lot of trouble either making it through and setting up a third round encounter with Kenin.

Kalinina was on court for an hour and 26 minutes and in that she routed Anna Blinkova 6-2, 6-2. Slamming seven aces, Kalinina also faced an equal number of break-points in the encounter but saved every single one of them.

In turn, of the 10 chances she got, Kalinina overcame her opponent’s serve on four occasions – twice in each of the two sets.

In doing so, Kalinina had also managed to reverse a four-match losing streak which had seen her go down in the opening round matches at both, the Charleston Open and the Madrid Open. And one those losses also came in Miami where she had lost to Kenin.

Can she avenge that defeat?

Kenin v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Kenin to win: 10/11
