Qinwen Zheng v Xiyu Wang Head to Head
Their previous meeting came in the 2022 Valencia Open final on clay and Qinwen had won it in a hard-fought three-setter.

Zheng Takes Care of Bondar
It took Zheng two hours and nine minutes alright but in the end, she managed to grab a three-set win over Anna Bondar and make it to the fourth round. This was also the first time this season that Zheng had won successive matches on clay.
Zheng was up a break early in the first set, had a set-point at 5-3 on her opponent’s serve and then served for the set at 5-4 but was forced into a tie-breaker by Bondar. Unfortunately for Bondar, that’s where her resistance ended as Qinwen went 3-0 ahead and then managed to win it 7-3.
And after the two players had exchanged breaks in the first two games of the second set, Qinwen broke her opponent three more times – dropping serve twice in the process – to grab the encounter 7-6 (2), 6-4.
This follows a similar, straight-set win over Alize Cornet in the previous round for Zheng who had earlier lost in the third round of the Madrid Open.

Wang Overcomes Townsend after Saving Match-Point
A third round appearance in the Madrid Open might have been put down to being a flash in the pan performance but Wang looks to have proven her naysayers wrong with another strong showing.
The world number 75 shrugged off a second set bagel against her in the third round to register a 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 win over Taylor Townsend to make it to the round of 16. This, coming from a player who had never played in the Italian Open before this.
Wang, who was 11/10 to surprise Townsend, overcame a break of serve in the very first game of the opening set to rattle past her opponent with three breaks of serves. Not to be outdone, the American retaliated with three breaks of serves in a row too to level things out and take the match into a decider.
Townsend drew first blood and went 3-1 ahead, soon serving for the match at 5-3. She had a match-point too but Wang broke right back and then again for the secon time to squeeze past her opponent.
Can she take the same fight to her fellow countrywoman?

Qinwen should not have a lot of trouble in dishing out another straight-set win but given these two know each other’s style a lot, the match could get close. Or at least one of the sets might.
