Brandon Nakashima v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, and that was on the hard courts of Antwerp two years ago, Schwartzman winning in straight sets.

Nakashima Has Yet to Win on Clay This Year

Nakashima is much better known as a hard court player, winning his first senior title last year in San Diego, and going on, a few months later, to be crowned the NextGen ATP champion.

Still, he can be reasonably satisfied with his debut in Paris last year, where he reached the third round.

The 21 year old, though, has not had much preparation for that Grand Slam this year.

After playing in Miami, he chose to skip the first half of the European clay court season and only made his reappearance in the Challenger event in Aix-en-Provence, where he lost his opening match.

And Rome also ended in disappointing fashion for the American, losing in the first round to Gregoire Barrere of France, beaten in straight sets.

He is still chasing his first clay court victory of the year.

Schwartzman Struggling for Form

It has been a rather sudden fall from grace for Schwartzman, who was ranked in the top ten in the world less than three years ago.

However, the form that has seen him reach 14 senior finals in his career, winning four of them, three of them on clay, seems to have deserted him, temporarily at least.

Despite that, he will still be hopeful of achieving big things in Paris, where he has a fine record – he reached the semi-finals there in 2020, has twice reached the last eight, and was knocked-out in the fourth round of Roland Garros last year.

Based on recent results, though, he will not rate his chances so highly this year.

Apart from Monte Carlo and Barcelona, where he reached the second round, he has been beaten in the first round of his last four tournaments.

That sequence continued in Rome, where he was beaten in three sets by the Italian wildcard, Matteo Arnaldi.

Nakashima v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

In a normal year, Schwartzman would start the clear favourite because of his greater familiarity with the surface. Whilst his recent form suggests that he may struggle, he should still be better able to cope with the conditions in Lyon than Nakashima, whose preparations for the French Open appear undercooked.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Schwartzman to win: 7/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 11/9
