Auger-Aliassime Needs Something Under His Belt
Auger-Aliassime had won four ATP titles last season and that had taken him to a career-high of sixth in the world. He would entered the 2023 season gunning for a place in the top three but what has happened instead is a sudden fall in his fortunes on court.
A win-loss record of 12-9 isn’t too bad but when you are aiming to break into the top five, it doesn’t do too much justice.
More so because Auger-Aliassime also enters this tournament just a few days before the season’s second Grand Slam with a 0-2 win-loss record on clay.
At the Madrid Masters it was Dusan Lajovic who trumped Auger-Aliassime in three sets. And that was followed by Alexei Popyrin getting the better of him in Rome.
Auger-Aliassime now faces the world number 240 and that should give him a good chance to register his maiden clay court win of 2023. Can he use it to catapult himself back into some sort of rhythm?

Ruiz Wins Maiden Match on Tour
Ruiz hadn’t played at the highest level before this and for him to even win back to back qualifiers to make the main draw was a big surprise. The world number 240 then started off a favourite against Max Purcell and took him out in three fighting sets to register his first ever win.
In a match lasting two hours and 16 minutes, Ruiz was a 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1 winner over Purcell after having missed out a chance to serve it out in the 12th game of the second set and then squandered a match-point in the ensuing tie-breaker.
That did not bother Ruiz too much as he broke his opponent two times in the final set to make it past Purcell.
This has already been a huge change of fortunes for a player who was, not so long ago this season, playing on the Futures circuit. He might not have a lot of lose in this one, making him an even dangerous player.
Auger-Aliassime v Ruiz Prediction and Tip
Auger-Aliassime should have been a whopping favourite – instead he’s rather long at 2/7 and that’s thanks to his form on clay. Backing him to win but for the match to last a while.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win: 2/7
- Moderate Risk Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win & Over 20.5 games: 7/5
