Putintseva Through to Second QF of 2023

Yulia Putintseva made short work of Leolia Jeanjean, beating the World No. 129 with embarrassing ease.

The Kazakh took 75 minutes, taking her total time on court less than three hours in reaching her second quarterfinal of the season, and it’s been a long time coming with her first going all the way back in the opening weeks of the season in Hobart.

Putintseva made full use of her athleticism and speed around the court breaking the Frenchwoman twice in a clinical first set where she did not face any break points on her serve.

Jeanjean had pinched her first Tour-level win of the season when she beat Gabriela Lee in the first round, but two days of rest seemed to hurt her momentum as she barely laid a glove on Putintseva.

The Kazakh went on a rampage in the second set, building a 5-0 lead, and served for the bagel, but wasted five match points. Jeanjean got her first break of the match deep in the second set, but it was all in vain as Putintseva would break back immediately for the win.

Riera Upsets Sherif

Julia Riera is having the week of her life. The 20-year-old arrived in Rabat without a single match of note under her belt at Tour level.

She has been an alternate prior to the draw and was only eligible for the main draw once Sara Errani pulled out.

Riera has grabbed that opportunity with both hands as she took out French doubles specialist Kristina Mladenovic in her opener to record her maiden win on Tour. But her second-round stunner against Mayar Sherif has left many fans in Rabat gasping in shock.

Sherif was Africa’s biggest hope at this tournament, but she could not keep her nerves under control. She served for the first set at 5-3 up, but lost four straight games.

In the second set, the Egpytian led 4-2, but it was deja vu again as Riera’s rally tolerance drew a flurry of errors to bring the score on level terms. But despite saving four match points at 4-5, Sherif was broken in the 12th game of the match.

Putintseva v Riera Prediction and Tip

A spectacular win in the round of 16 means that Julia Riera’s week could get even better. But we can’t see Putintseva being as profligate or wasteful with her chances here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Putintseva to win: 1/4
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Putintseva in straight sets: 8/11
