Van Assche Won Boys’ Singles Two Years Ago

Although this is the first time in the main draw for Van Assche, Roland Garros has happy memories for the teenager. Two years ago he won the boys’ singles here, beating compatriot Arthur Fils in straight sets in the final.

Since then he has been making waves on the Challenger tour, where he has appeared in six finals in the past eight months, winning the last three of those, including two this year, one on hard courts in Italy, and the other on clay in France.

He made his Grand Slam debut as a wildcard in Melbourne, and his first main draw win came in Estoril where he beat fellow qualifier Pedro Sousa.

At the Sprska Open he recorded his first win over a top 100 player, when he beat Stan Wawrinka, and in his next match there, he took a set off Novak Djokovic.

He is currently the youngest player in the top 100.

Cecchinato Reached Semi-Finals in 2018

Five years ago, Cecchinato reached the semi-finals in Paris, stunning Djokovic in the quarter-finals, before finally losing to Dominic Thiem. That remains by far his best performance in a Grand Slam, and he has not been further than the third round in Paris since.

All five of his ATP finals have been on clay, but it has been more than four years since his last tournament victory at that level.

He has, though, tasted success on the Challenger tour since, and won two titles last year. The Italian has been in reasonable form recently, reaching the semi-finals in Estoril, and the second round in Madrid after coming through qualifying.

His home Masters’ event in Rome saw him get to the third round, beating Roberto Batuista-Agut in the process.

Cecchinato’s last tournament was Geneva where he was knocked out in the second round by Yibing Wu of China.

Van Assche v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

Whilst van Assche certainly should not be underestimated on these courts, especially with the home crowd behind him, Cecchinato has far more experience of playing in Grand Slams, and he should be able to lean on that to navigate his way past the teenager.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip:  Cecchinato to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Cecchinato to win in four sets: 7/2
