The pair have played each other twice before, both matches taking place on hard courts in 2022.

Bonzi won in Winston Salem but Monteiro was the victor later in the year in Gijon.

Monteiro Struggling on HIs Favourite Surface

Although Monteiro first competed in Paris in 2016, the Brazilian number one has a mixed record in this tournament, and one third round appearance three years ago is the best he has managed so far at Roland Garros (although that remains his best result in a Grand Slam).

Nor has clay, his favourite surface, been very kind to him so far this year. With his quarter-final in Santiago back in March the highwater mark of his season so far.

His first tournament in Europe ended in first round defeat in Munich, although he went one stage further in Madrid.

Injury forced him out of a Challenger event in Cagliari, but he returned in time to reach the second round in Rome.

Failing to qualify in Geneva, though, was not the best preparation for this tournament.

Bonzi’s First Match Since Monte Carlo Injury

Bonzi’s record in Paris is even more modest than Monteiro’s – two second round appearances are the best he has managed to date.

Much better known as a hard court player – he reached the third round of the Australian Open in January,- he nevertheless does have a couple of clay court titles to his name on the Challenger tour, the most recent of which was 11 months ago in Aix-en-Provence.

However, he has played very little clay court tennis this year.

He reached the second round in Marrakech and from there he travelled to Monte Carlo, where he also reached the second round, before he was forced to pull out of his match with Stefanos Tsitsipas with an injury.

That has kept him away from the main tour ever since, and he is only now making his comeback.

Monteiro v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Whilst Monteiro’s form on clay this year has been disappointing, he is playing a man who is making a comeback after injury, and will be short of match practice. That would seem to tilt the odds in favour of the Brazilian.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Monteiro to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Monteiro to win in four sets: 11/4
