Daniel Enjoys Resurgent Year

Taro Daniel was one of the players to watch in North America. The Japanese veteran rolled back the years playing some swashbuckling tennis at Acapulco and Indian Wells.

The fact that Daniel made the quarterfinals in Mexico and the third round in California as a qualifier, made his runs even more special.

Daniel tallied wins over Casper Ruud and Matteo Berrettini, and although he lost in the third round in Miami, he delivered an absolute drubbing to Alexander Zverev dropping just four games.

His form at this year’s clay swing has not hit those standards he set on hard courts, winning three main draw matches and which all came at the Challenger Tour. As a result, Daniel who had recently re-entered the top 100 has now lost his spot in the centurion club.

The 30-year-old has endured a drought at the French Open in recent years with his last main draw win dating back to 2017.

O’Connell Loses A Classic in Geneva

Christopher O’Connell led Grigor Dimitrov by a set and a break, but lost their quarterfinal match in Geneva 6-7 7-5 6-4.

It left O’Connell with a bittersweet taste. Although on one side he choked a huge advantage, he still left Switzerland knowing that he’ll attain a career-high ranking of No. 75.

The Australian one-hander has played some sublime tennis on the European clay posting an 11-6 record. O’Connell made his first ATP semifinal on the dirt in Munich, accounting for wins over Ugo Humbert and Alexander Zverev before losing to eventual champion Holger Rune.

The 28-year-old has yet to win a main draw match at the French Open in two visits, but he is primed to break his duck this year when he takes on Taro Daniel in a battle of the undercards.

Daniel v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

Daniel has plenty of experience at Grand Slam level than O’Connell, playing more matches and recording more wins. But the formbook favors O’Connell and the Aussie is playing better tennis right now which should tip the scales to his side.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: O’Connell to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 4/6
