Bencic Returns after Charleston

Bencic looked to be headed in the right direction with her results for the season as she entered the Charleston Open on the back of 16 wins and five defeats for the season. This constituted two title wins in Adelaide and Abu Dhabi.

And she nearly won a third in Charleston when Bencic made the final before Ons Jabeur pulled off a difficult win in the title-decider.

That, unfortunately, was the last time that Bencic played competitive tennis before her return to the French Open. This was because of a hip injury that caused her a lot of bother during the US swing for which she needed to take rest in order to be able to return to competitive tennis at full tilt.

Here she is now, returning to a Grand Slam at which she has never reached the fourth round in her career. Can she shrug off her fitness concerns in an opening round encounter against a player who has never been ranked better than 122nd in the world?

Avanesyan Makes it as a Lucky Loser

The 20-year-old Avanesyan first featured in a Grand Slam last season at the US Open having made the tournament as a qualifier. This time around it looked like her dream of playing in another Grand Slam looked to be pushed down the road again as she lost her third qualifying round match at Roland-Garros.

Having failed to make it to the main draw at the Australian Open either, this would have disheartening for the talented Russian but a late withdrawal from Patricia Tig meant that Avanesyan had got her chance as a lucky loser.

Avanesyan had earlier made it to the second round of the Bogota Open as well, the same tournament in which she had played her first ever WTA competition last season. There she had made the quarterfinals.

Now facing a player of the reputation of Bencic, Avanesyan would believe she might an outside chance too. For one, her opponent isn’t the most proficient in this tournament and secondly is coming off an injury layoff.

Bencic v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip

Bencic is 1/12 to win this but does it look that simple for her? We think otherwise and while a win is certainly on the cards as you would expect in a first round match of this nature, it could take some effort.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 7.5 games in the first set: 2/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 10/11
