Dimitrov In Fine Touch
While we were writing this preview Grigor Dimitrov was getting ready to play in the Geneva Open final. It is the 16th time that the Bulgarian has reached a final at the tour level, but it’s significant because the last time Dimitrov played in a final it was in 2018 in Rotterdam, when he went down to Roger Federer.
The year before in 2017, Dimitrov had had the best year of his career, winning four of his eight titles, including the ATP Finals title.
However, despite showing promise on quite a few occasions, Dimitrov failed to reach a final for the last five years. The drought ended Friday, when he ousted Taylor Fritz in the semifinal in Geneva to setup the title clash with Nicolas Jarry.
This will be Dimitrov’s third clay court final. He has a 1-1 record from his two previous finals.
The 32-year-old world no. 33 is 7-3 on clay this year and has an overall record of 16-9. He has won all his opening round fixtures on clay this season and will be heading to his 13th French Open will a lot of confidence.
The clay court major is the only Grand Slam where Dimitrov has not reached a quarterfinal. His best was a fourth round finish in 2020. Can he make a deep run this year?

Skatov Qualifies for the Main Draw
World no. 147 Timofey Skatov scored back-to-back come-from-behind wins to secure a place in the main draw of the French Open.
The 22-year-old Kazakh, who will be making his Roland Garros debut, had beaten Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 7-6 in the first qualifying round and then rallied against Otto Virtanen to score a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win in the second qualifying round.
In the final qualifying round, Skatov once again lost the first set, but he bounced back to beat Felipe Alves 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Skatov is 2-1 at the senior level this year with his only wins coming at the United Cup and the Davis Cup. Overall Skatov has played just two Challenger tournaments and plenty of qualifying round matches this year.
The Kazakh is 15-12 overall and 11-9 on clay. His best performance of the season saw him finish runner-up to Federico Coria at the Concepcion Challenger on clay.
Can Skatov make an impressive start?
