Cressy on an 8-Match Losing Streak
Maxime Cressy heads to his second French Open on the back of eight consecutive defeats. The American, who showed a lot of promise last season, had reached his fourth ATP final in Montpellier earlier this year, but since finishing runner-up to Jannik Sinner, he has had little success this year.
In fact, Cressy has been in such a poor form that the last time he won a match this year was in the first round in Marseille on February 21. Since then, the 26-year-old has lost eight on row.
On clay, the world no. 42 has played four times in 2023 and has lost all four of them, making first round exits from Marrakech, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
Cressy, however, doesn’t have a great record on clay and a 1-9 career record on clay at the tour level is a testament of that.
He has a poor clay record even at the Challenger and the ITF levels and therefore he will find it difficult in his second main draw appearance at the French Open. Last year, he had lost in the first round on his Roland Garros debut.

Ofner In Excellent Form
While Cressy has been struggling, Ofner has been in excellent form this season, albeit at the lower level.
Ofner heads to Roland Garros with a 36-15 season record, across levels, and that includes a 28-9 run on clay.
At the tour level, Ofner has played in just one match this year and that ended in a first round defeat to Dominic Thiem in Estoril. At the Challenger level, Ofner has played in four finals this year, but hasn’t been able to add to his three previous titles.
One of Ofner’s four finals this year was on hard court (Tenerife) while the three others were on clay (Antalya, Zadar and Prague-2).
He is 11-2 this month from all his matches and that includes the three qualifying round wins which sent the Austrian into the main draw of the French Open for the second time in his career.
Ofner ousted Rio Noguchi, Jan Choinski and Facundo Diaz Acosta in the three qualifying rounds respectively to reach the main draw.
Last year, the world no. 118 was knocked out in the opening round of his Roland Garros debut, but this year he has a good chance of advancing.
Cressy v Ofner Prediction and Tip
Cressy has been in poor form and he doesn’t have a great record on clay either. In contrast, Ofner has been in terrific form, winning matches consistently, albeit at the lower level. Ofner’s form and record on clay gives him the edge in this contest. Expect the Austrian to beat the American and reach the second round.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Ofner to win: 2/5
- Moderate Risk Tip: Under 36.5 games in the match: 5/6
