Djokovic Hoping to Put Fitness Woes Behind Him

It’s not often that you see Djokovic struggle to win matches in back to back tournaments. But since winning the Australian Open, Djokovic hasn’t quite been himself on court.

Sure there have been other issues – the non-issuance of the US visa to feature in the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters and the elbow injury more recently that made things more difficult than usual for the 22-time Grand Slam winner.

That being said, for Djokovic to not reach even the final at any of the four tournaments he’s played since that major win in Melbourne will be a surprise to many.

A semifinal appearance at the ATP Dubai has been his best showing, which was followed by a round of 16 loss at Monte-Carlo, another quarterfinal defeat at Banja Luka and a quarterfinal loss in Rome.

He will hope to make a statement win first up as he sharpens his claws in an attempt to pull through Grand Slam number 23.

Kovacevic 0-4 on Clay This Season

Kovacevic has never been ranked in the top 100 in his career and enters this tournament with a ranking of 114th in the world. What more, he isn’t much of a clay court player either having rarely won matches on this surface at any level and none at the highest level.

This season, Kovacevic has played four times on clay – in the first rounds of the Houston Open, Cagliari Challenger and Turin Challenger and the qualifiers of the Rome Masters. And he has lost every single time.

In fact, in the four matches, Kovacevic has won a mere one set, making this a rather difficult proposition on what will be his Grand Slam main draw debut.

Can expect Kovacevic to come into the match knowing he has nothing to lose and put up a brave front for a while going for his shots but there is only so far he would get with that.

Djokovic v Kovacevic Prediction and Tip

Expecting an easy, straight-set win for Djokovic in a match that shouldn’t test him even slightly.
