Begu Making Her 12th Appearance at Roland Garros

It’s been an up-and-down season so far for Irina-Camelia Begu, but the Romanian heads to Paris in decent touch, having recently reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Madrid. It was the third time that she made it that far in the tournament but failed to reach the semifinals once again, losing a tough three-setter to Maria Sakkari.

Begu, who reached the round of 16 at Charleston, is 5-3 on clay and 10-9 overall this season. Her best result this season saw her reach the semifinals in Adelaide.

The 32-year-old, ranked no. 27th in the world, will be making her 12th appearance in the main draw of the French Open.

She has never reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, but twice she has made it to the last 16 at Roland Garros: once in 2016 and once last year.

The five-time tour level champion is a very good clay court player and has a 2-2 record in finals played on the surface.

She will be looking to make a quick start and build on that.

Bondar Has Been Inconsistent This Year

Facing Begu in the first round will be world no. 103 Anna Bondar, who lost in the first round of her Roland Garros debut in 2022.  Bondar was beaten by Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

This year the Hungarian will aim to get her first win on the clay court major. She won her first ever Grand slam match at the Australian Open this year, beating Ana Bogdan in the first round. However, she was knocked out in the second by Jelena Ostapenko.

Since the Australian Open, Bondar has made plenty of first round exits, however, she had her best run of the season recently in Rome, when she won both her qualifying matches and then went on to beat Tatjana Maria and Karolina Pliskova to reach the third round, where her progress was stopped by Qinwen Zheng.

Thanks to that run, Bondar is 5-5 on clay, across levels this year. Can she put up a strong challenge in the French Open opener?

Begu v Bondar Prediction and Tip

Begu is far more experienced than Bondar, particularly in big tournaments and that gives her the edge in this contest.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Begu to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
