Draper Returns from Injury at Lyon

Draper had been out of action because of fitness concerns but he made a strong return to competitive tennis with his quarterfinal appearance at the Lyon Open.

The Brit overcame Alexandre Muller and Miomir Kecmanovic in the first two rounds there to set up a last eight meeting with Francisco Cerundolo. And while he was a distant second-favourite going into that encounter, Draper put up some fight before going down in three sets.

The only tournament that Draper had earlier played on clay this season was at the Monte-Carlo Masters where he had defeated the much-fancied Sebastian Baez before Hubert Hurkacz got the better of him.

Where all of this has led to is his maiden appearance at the French Open with Draper having not even played the qualifiers in this tournament before this.

He starts things off against a player who loves his time on clay and is on a career-high ranking as well.

It’s been a steady growth for Etcheverry on the main tennis circuit with the Argentine having risen to 46th in the world despite having lost in the second round at each of his previous ATP tournaments on clay.

Those came in Barcelona, Madrid and Rome after Etcheverry had made it to the final of the Houston Open before that.

Opting to feature in the Bordeaux Challenger last week, Etcheverry then overcame the likes of Ilya Ivashka, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Jan-Lennard Struff to make it to the final there.

While Etcheverry fell to Ugo Humbert in the title-decider he would enter this tournament with a lot of confidence as he looks to win his first match at the French Open.

Etcheverry has a difficult opening round match but on clay, he will have a bit of an advantage against a player who hasn’t played a lot of tennis in recent times.
