Max Purcell v Jordan Thompson Head to Head
The pair have played each other four times before.
Purcell won on the main tour in Winston Salem last year, but Thompson has emerged victor in all three of their meetings on the Challenger tour, including one on clay.

Purcell Primarily Known for Doubles’ Exploits
Purcell has just reached his highest ever singles world ranking, although he is better known as a doubles player.
He won the Wimbledon championship last year and, earlier that year, was a beaten finalist at the Australian Open, having suffered the same fate in Melbourne two years earlier.
Singles-wise, he has yet to replicate that form in Grand Slams, and has never been beyond the first round of any them, and has never even qualified in Roland Garros before.
This year has seen him enjoy great success on the Challenger tour, reaching six finals, all of them on hard courts, and winning three of them.
Not known as a clay court player, he has had just one match on the surface so far this season, and that was in Lyon, where he was beaten in the first round by Pablo Llamas Ruiz of Spain, a player ranked 240th in the world.
However, he has won a clay court title this year in Houston in the doubles, where his partner was Thompson.

Thompson Partnered Purcell to Houston Success
Thompson made his debut in Paris in 2015, although he did not get out of qualifying that year.
Since then, he has appeared in the main draw every year, although his third round appearance in 2019 was something of an anomaly compared to a series of first round defeats.
Like Purcell, he is much better known as a hard court player, that doubles success at the US Clay Court Championship last month notwithstanding.
And he also shares with Purcell the fact that he has enjoyed Challenger success this year, winning two titles in the USA and, earlier this month, in South Korea.
Another thing they share in common is a lack of preparation on clay. Thompson’s one previous singles match saw him lose in the first round in Houston.
Purcell v Thompson Prediction and Tip
As doubles partners, these two know each other very well. Neither is a clay court player, and neither has spent much time preparing for this tournament. But the fact that Thompson does have a clay court victory over Purcell on his record makes him the favourite.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Thompson to win: 8/11
- Moderate Risk Tip: Under 38.5 games in the match: 5/6
