Karatsev Formiddable In Qualifying

After a year in the wilderness, Aslan Karatsev is in the midst of a career renaissance in 2023. The Russian was a forgotten one-hit wonder back in 2021, creating all sorts of first-time records in almost every event he played.

But he endured a disastrous season in 2022 and his ranking fell back into three digits from a career-high world No. 14.

Karatsev’s 2023 campaign began positively, with a semifinal run in Pune in the opening week of the season. But he is form began  to pick up consistently on the European clay qualifying for events in Munich and Madrid.

In the Spanish capital he came full circle, tallyign wins over Alex De Minaur and Daniil Medvedev, the latter being his first top 10 win in a while, en route to the semsi where his body ran out of fumes and lost an in-form Jan-Lennard Struff.

Karatsev’s run pushed his ranking into a top 70 spot, although so late to get a Roland Garros automatic entry, he qualified the event with minimum fuss – beating Herbert, Hardt, and Moreno De Alboran without dropping a set.

Alexei Popyrin is a former junior winner at Roland Garros, clinching the title in 2017 and vaulting to a junior ranking of No. 2 before he decided to switch to the professional circuit.

It was a case of baptism by fire at first glance, but a first ATP Challenger title soon followed in 2018. And by 2019, he played 30 matches at Tour level, reaching his first quarterfinal in Atlanta.

Incidentally, 2019 was also the last time Popyrin won a main draw match at the French Open at the senior level.

The Aussie achieved a career-high ranking of No. 59 back in 2021 – the same year he won his first ATP title in Singapore before his form took a sharp nosedive.

But like Karatsev, Popyrin has worked on his game during the off-season and has played some of his best tennis this season both at Grand Slam level and in ATP tournaments.

Popyrin is 23-15 for the season and arrives in Paris following a thrilling run to the third round of the Rome Masters as a qualifier. The 23-year-old owns three top-10 wins this season.
