Varillas Retired In Lyon
Juan Pablo Varillas qualified and played in the main draw of the French Open for the first time last season after two failed attempts.
The Peruvian came within a set from knocking off Canada’s Felix-Auger-Aliassime by taking a two-sets-to-love lead in the first round before his lead was so emphatically wiped away.
The five-set defeat was a blessing in disguise as it kickstarted a winning spree on the ATP Tour. Varillas reached his first quarterfinal in Gstaad beating the likes of Lorenzo Sonego and Roberto Bautista Agut.
By the end of the close season, he won his fifth Challenger title in San Leopoldo in Brazil.
In the current campaign, Varillas once again came close to mastering his first Grand Slam main draw win, losing another five-setter to Alexander Zverev.
He has featured predominantly on the Challenger Tour, but he has recorded a creditable semifinal showing in on the red clay in Buenos Aires.
Varillas was last in action in Lyon where he retired in the round of 16 against Francisco Cerundolo due to physical issues.

Shang Becomes Third Chinese Man In 2023 Draw
Shang Juncheng’s successful qualifying campaign at the French Open meant that he joined compatriots Yibing Wu and Zhizhen Zhang who entered the draw with their top-100 ranking.
Not for Juncheng though who battled three rounds of qualifying before defeating Renzo Olivo on Thursday in three sets to spark jubilant scenes among his camp.
It is now two straight Grand Slam tournaments that three Chinese men have earned their places in the main draw, having done so at the Australian Open in January too.
Shang, who was also part of a successful qualifying run in Melbourne, will be a name to keep tabs on for the rest of the season.
The 18-year-old won a maiden ATP Challenger title in Lexington, Kentucky, last season but has featured sporadically on the court this year largely due to the injury he picked up in Houston.
Nonetheless, he showed no physical issues in punching his ticket in the main draw, dropping just one set in the qualifying rounds.
Varillas v Juncheng Prediction and Tip
There is a question mark in regard to Varillas’ fitness. Was his injury precautionary or more serious than at first look? We’ll soon find out, but safe to say this is unlikely to be straight sets win for either player.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 8/13
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 5/6
