Potapova Makes Short Work of Townsend

Around 13 months, Potapova was ranked 124th in the world and was forced to play in the qualifiers here at the French Open. Fast-forward by a year and she came into the tournament as a seeded player and has managed to rout her first round opponent Taylor Townsend.

Potapova’s turnaround began last year in Istanbul where she won the title as a qualifier and she would go on to make the semifinal at the Lausanne Open and Hamburg Open. A final on the hardcourt surfaces of Prague Open would help her break new grounds as she entered 2023 as one of the players to watch out.

And Potapova hasn’t disappointed, having won a title at the Linz Open and making the quarterfinal in Miami.

Coming into the French Open with a 5-3 win-loss record for the season on clay, she went on to crush Townsend 6-1, 6-2 in an hour and 11 minutes to march into the second round for only the second time in her career.

She has never made it to round three but will consider herself a strong favourite to break that record.

Sherif Sends Brengle Packing

Much like Potapova, her second round opponent Sherif too did not spend a lot of time in getting through her opener.

Sherif, who is looking to inspire more women from the African continent to take up the sport, came through 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and seven minutes against Madison Brengle to make it to the second round.

The Egyptian did face two break-points in the first set and was broken once but by then she was already 5-2 up. And Sherif broke Brengle right back to wrap up the set before racing away with two more breaks of serves in the second set to win it.

This follows a year in which Sherif has already made it to the quarterfinal of the Madrid Open and hit a career-high of 43rd in the world. Can she put up a fight here?

Potapova v Sherif Prediction and Tip

While Sherif has done all season and has steadily grown on the rankings charts, Potapova will hold the chips in this one and should come away a winner. Might not be as easy as her opening win though.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Potapova to win: 4/9
  • High Risk Tip: Potapova to win AND Over 20.5 games in the match: 8/5
