Irina Camelia Begu v Sara Errani Head to Head

There have been five previous meetings between these two and Errani leads 3-2 overall. On clay it’s 2-2 while over the last two meetings, Begu leads 2-0.

Begu Stifles Bondar

Anna Bondar put up a bit of a fight in the first set of her opener but once Begu had her opponent’s measure there was no looking back for the Romanian player.

Begu was on court for an hour and 40 minutes and shrugged off a 2-4 deficit to win 11 of the last 13 games and with that a place in the second round. Having staved off nine of the 11 break-points she faced, Begu also broke Bondar five times in the encounter for her 6-4, 6-2 win.

A fourth round appearance at the French Open last year meant that Begu was coming into this match filled with confidence despite her opening round defeat at the Italian Open two weeks. She opted not to play any other tournaments before Roland-Garros, which was another indicator what she felt about her own chances.

And that could have stemmed from the manner in which she had made the quarterfinal at the Madrid Open.

What needs to now be seen is if Begu can dish out a similar treatment to the much-improved Errani.

Errani Shocks Tiechmann

The last time Errani was a top-100 player was way back in 2018. Since then her performances on court have fluctuated between ordinary and grossly underwhelming and Errani has even hit a low of 366th in the world.

This year, however, things have changed around a little for the former world number five.

Errani broke into the top-100 for the first time in five years thanks to her title win on the ITF circuit and she forged ahead with performances in San Louis Potosi and Florence – two WTA 125 competitions.

However, going up against Jil Teichmann in the first round here, Errani hadn’t been given much of a chance with bookmakers offering 11/5 for her win.

And when Errani lost the first set to one break of serve, those odds lengthened considerably. Errani is an experienced campaigner though and add a bit of form and rhythm to that and you get a potent combination.

That is exactly what happened as Errani came through in three sets, despite somewhat of a fight put up by Teichmann in the second set.

Can she now surprise the lot by making it two wins in a row for the first time at a Grand Slam since the 2021 Australian Open.

Begu v Errani Prediction and Tip

Begu is a huge favourite at 1/5 but that’s discounting Errani’s fighting capabilities. The games handicap looks like a good option in this case.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Errani +5.5: 4/5
