Sonego Lives up to Favourite Tag against Shelton
In a match that lasted nearly three hours, Sonego took four sets to live up to the 9/20 odds on offer for his win against Ben Shelton.
Sonego won his opener 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second round for the second year in a row, earning his fifth win of the season on clay to go with his four defeats.
Having made the third round at the Rome Masters before this tournament, Sonego was a set and 3-1 up when a mid-match stumble saw him get broken twice in a row. He lost the second set as a result.
However, if Shelton thought the momentum was swing in his favour from that point on, he was wrong as Sonego broke early in the third set. The Italian dropped his serve in the fifth game again but this time around he didn’t allow Shelton to take control, breaking him again in the very next game.
A double break in the first three games of the fourth set was all that Sonego needed to pull through to round two.

Humbert Routs Mannarino
In an all-Frenchman battle, Humbert needed less than two hours to carve off a straight-set win over Adrian Mannarino and advance to the second round.
Humbert, who had shown some brilliant form on clay on the Challenger circuit before this tournament, registered a 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 win over Mannarino to win his first ever main draw match at Roland-Garros in his seventh attempt.
Such was the clinical nature of Humbert’s win, he saved all of the five break-points he faced but at the same time broke his opponent five times from the 19 opportunities he got. Yes, that’s right, 19 break-point chances thanks thanks to his 29 winners and Mannarino’s whopping 42 unforced errors.
Humbert now faces a way tougher opponent but as far as confidence goes, he would be on a bit of a high here. Can he take down Sonego and double his win count at the French Open?
