Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada will be pleased with her start to the 2023 Roland Garros. In the opener, she upset the reigning Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, in a little over two hours.
She is now 17-12 this season and is now on the prowl for a mid-season revival. Last year, she was a quarterfinalist in Paris so she does have some precedent to work with.
Her buildup to the Slam was less than eventful; while she faltered heavily in big events like WTA Charleston, Madrid Open, and Italian Open, Fernandez did build some momentum by reaching the semis in ITF Madrid. Unfortunately, that result was followed by a round two exit at the hands of Peyton Stearns in Rabat.
Leylah has struggled of late to live up to the expectations one has from a US Open finalist but in her defence, she is just 20 and gaining experience. She has done well in doubles this season by reaching the final in ASB Classic and Miami Open.

Denmark’s Clara Tauson made quick work of Aliaksandra Sasnovich, as she dismissed the Belarusian 6-2, 6-0, in just 69 minutes.
The 127th-ranked Dane started this Slam as a qualifier, beating Katie Swan, Petra Marcinko, and Mirjam Bjorklund en route.
Tauson, a former World No. 33, fell on tough times last season due to an injury-stricken year. Luckily, time is on her side and she seems to have recuperated well.
She is already 24-9 in 2023 and armed with two ITF Finals. Tauson was a quarterfinalist in the Linz Open as well (as a qualifier). That said, things have not been flawless for her either, seeing that she fell to Kateryna Zavatska in round two of ITF Madrid.

We may be looking at the start of a wonderful rivalry. Both players are in a similar tide but Tauson’s overall momentum does give her some edge. She was making steady strides when injury derailed her tempo but by the looks of it, she is finding that rhythm back.
