Elise Mertens v Camila Osorio Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 Wimbledon where they were tied at one set apiece when Osorio retired from the contest. She had taken over a month to return to competitive tennis after that.

Mertens Eases Past Hruncakova

It wasn’t expected to be much of a test for Mertens and that’s exactly how her first round matched turned out to be.

Taking on the qualifier Viktoria Hruncakova in her opener, Mertens came away a 6-1, 6-4 winner in a match that lasted a shade over an hour and a half.

Mertens, who hasn’t had the most sparkling of starts to the clay court swing with just two wins from her five matches this year, did lose her serve four times including once in the first set but never looked like she was in a danger of the match going into the third set.

A couple of early breaks ensured she had eased past her opponent in the first set and while she twice fell a break down in the second set, Mertens came back easily both times. Another pair of breaks were traded late in the second set before Mertens broke Hruncakova as she served to stay in the match.

Things could get slightly more difficult against Osorio though.

Osorio Makes a Comeback Win

Osorio had been knocked out of the competition in the qualifiers by Mirra Andreeva but managed to enter the main draw as lucky loser. She then lost the first set of her opener to Ana Bogdan but came back to win the match in three to make it to the second round here for the second time in a row.

The topsy-turvy match lasted two hours and 10 minutes and saw Osorio come through 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The Colombian, who had earlier made the fourth round of the Italian Open after starting out as a qualifier, looked to have got the measure of her opponent when she levelled the match by winning the second set. And then in the third, she raced off to a 5-1 lead.

Bogdan came back strongly, breaking back twice, even saving two match-points in the process to level things out at 5-5. Unfortunately for her that’s where that fightback ended with Osorio breaking again and serving out to love.

With confidence under her belt, Osorio will now think she has a good chance to get past the more fancied Mertens.

Mertens v Osorio Prediction and Tip

As the odds suggest, not much to choose between these two and while Mertens is a favourite, I think Osorio has the momentum going for her. Expecting her to edge out her Belgian opponent.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Osorio to win: 1/1
