Roberto Bautista-Agut v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head

The pair have met once before on the clay of Gstaad last year, Varillas winning their round of 16 match in straight sets.

Bautista-Agut Enjoys Comfortable First Round Win

Like Varillas, Bautista-Agut also faced Chinese opposition in the first round in the form of Yibing Wu, who, earlier this year, became the first male player from his country to win a senior ATP title.

That, though, was on the hard courts of Dallas, and clay is not a surface that suits his natural game, whereas it is second nature for Bautista-Agut.

All Wu’s best moments came in the first set, including a break in the opening game of the match, and then a second break after the Spaniard had levelled.

Unfortunately he could not hold on to his advantage, it went to a tie-break, which Bautista-Agut went on to claim.

It was largely one way traffic after that as the Spaniard raced through the second set for the loss of just one game, and then did the same in the third.

For the 19th seed, it had been a comfortable day at the office.

Varillas Given Qualifier Scare

Varillas qualified for a Grand Slam for the first time in Paris a year ago, but then was beaten in the first round, and, for much of his match against the Chinese qualifier, Juncheng Shang, the world number 200, is looked like he would suffer the same fate.

The Peruvian broke Shang in the opening game of the match, but it did not take long for the man from China to recover that break, and another break gave him the first set.

When Shang also took the second set, breaking the Peruvian twice more, a minor upset seemed on the cards

Varillas, though, got the change of fortune he so desperately needed when he broke Shang at the start of the third set, and broke again as the tide began to turn.

And he levelled the match after a fourth set in which he again broke his opponent twice.

By this time Shang’s resistance was largely broken, and Varillas was able to race to a five love lead in the fifth set, and close out the match from there.

Bautista-Agut v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Although Varillas won their previous match on clay, the comparative way in which they dealt with first round Chinese opponents suggests that he might struggle against the Spaniard this time.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Bautista-Agut to win: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 38.5 games in the match: 5/6
