Zhang Zhizhen won his first ever match at a Grand Slam as the world no. 71 advanced to the second round of the French Open following Dusan Lajovic’s unfortunate withdrawal due to an injury.
Zhang had won the first set with ease and had broken once in the second set as well, before the Serbian world on 53 decided he couldn’t continue further.
Zhang, who had played in the first round in Wimbledon two years ago and was in the main draw at the U.S. Open last year, improved his season record to 15-17 across levels. His best performance of the year saw him reach the last eight in Madrid, which included his first top 10 win over Taylor Fritz, and also a couple of other significant wins over Denis Shapovalov and Cameron Norrie.
Zhang, who won half of the 10 break points he held in the match against Lajovic, had reached three Challenger finals on clay last year, triumphing in one of them.

Argentina’s Thiago Agustín Tirante made a fantastic Grand Slam debut as the qualifier ousted Botic Van de Zandschulp in four sets on Monday.
The world no. 153 made the most of the opportunities provided by an error-prone Van de Zandschulp. Tirante saved 15 of 19 break points that he faced in the match and converted 7 of 13 that he held to beat the 25th seed Dutchman 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Van de Zandschulp double faulted 12 times in the match and made as many as 62 unforced errors, 32 more than Tirante.
The 22-year-old Argentine is 25-13 across levels in 2023 and 18-10 on clay. He had qualified for the main draw with wins over Rinky Hijikata, Gauthier Onclin and Dominic Stricker respectively, with the last two wins coming in three sets.
