Zheng Enjoying her Breakthrough Run

Qinwen Zheng is currently China’s number one player in the WTA Rankings; she is World No. 19 at the mere age of 20. Considering the way she is performing, a top-10 debut is certainly on the cards by the season’s end.

She began her campaign in Paris with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tamara Zidansek, needing just 76 minutes. In line with her powerful service game, Zheng dished out five aces and won 74% of the points behind the first serve.

That was also her 17th win of the year – a feat she achieved while dropping just nine matches. Most recently, she competed in the quarterfinal of the Rome Open, where she fell to Veronika Kudermetova. Qinwen’s other highlights include a semifinal showdown in Abu Dhabi and a round-of-16 stint in Miami.

The youngster has already proven herself to be an exceptional player who is comfortable on all turfs.

Putintseva Survives Zanevska

Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan began her journey in Paris with a 7-5, 7-6(3) win over the 89th-ranked Maryna Zanevska.

The result followed her quarterfinal feat in Rabat last week, where she was stunned by the 195th-ranked Julia Riera. That shocking loss against a lesser-known player on the tour obviously does not bode well for her prospects with Zheng.

Most of Yulia’s season has gone by in early-round exits – sans the Rabat Open and WTA Hobart (quarterfinal run). She is now 14-13 in 2023.

That said, Putintseva is a two-time quarterfinalist at the Roland Garros and is far more experienced than her Chinese adversary. Her two sole WTA titles have also come on clay – which can perhaps be her saving grace on Wednesday.

Zheng v Putitnseva Prediction and Tip

Zheng is the odds-on favourite here; she has been notoriously difficult to beat this year – especially at the hands of players ranked outside the top 50. Putintseva has got the skills to survive this match, but whether she can utilise them effectively is another question.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Zheng to win: 3/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games: 5/6
