The 2019 ATP Miami Masters draw was released earlier today and the Indian Wells Masters champion Dominic Thiem is in the same half of the draw as top seeded Novak Djokovic. In the other half of the draw, second seeded Alexander Zverev will be alongside Roger Federer, the fourth seed.
World number one Djokovic will be up against Tomas Berdych as early as in the second round in what could be one of the mouth-watering clashes of that round while Zverev will have to get past Frances Tiafoe if things go to plan.
Djokovic will face John Millman in his third round match while either Fabio Fognini or Roberto Bautista-Agut could be up for a match-up in the fourth. Interestingly, Djokovic had played in the doubles draw at the Indian Wells Masters with Fognini as his partner.
The Serb’s potential quarter-final opponent could be either the in-form and Indian Wells semi-finalist Milos Raonic or defending champion John Isner.
Raonic will need to get past Kyle Edmund in the third round and could have Isner waiting for him in the fourth.
On the other hand, if Zverev does get past Tiafoe in round three, should not have too many difficulties in overcoming Marco Cecchinato or David Goffin in the fourth and might be up against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals.
Much like the Indian Wells Masters, Federer will clash with Stan Wawrinka, in the third round before he goes on to face either Daniil Medvedev or Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round. If Federer wins this one, he could be up against Kevin Anderson in the quarter-finals.
Anderson, the sixth seed, will have a mountain of his own to climb as he could face Steve Johnson in the third round and Grigor Dimitrov or Karen Khachanov in the fourth.
Another third round encounter to watch out could see the Acapulco Open winner Nick Kyrgios take on Kei Nishikori. The winner of this match might have Borna Coric or Gilles Simon waiting in the fourth round and a potential match-up against Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals.
Third seeded Thiem should have no difficulties reaching the third round where he could face Marton Fucsovics, but his first real test might come in the fourth round where he could face Gael Monfils. Monfils had withdrawn from his match at the Indian Wells Masters, so fitness will be a concern for him.
Eighth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas faces the 26th seeded Guido Pella in round three, before a mouth-watering clash against either Marin Cilic or Denis Shapovalov could be in line for him.
In some of the interesting first round matches, Berdych takes on Bernard Tomic, Mischa Zverev will be up against Nicola Kuhn, Jeremy Chardy faces Nicolas Jarry and Feliciano Lopez plays Benoit Paire.
British player Cameron Norrie will be up against Jordan Thompson of Australia, Hyeon Chung faces Taro Daniel, Ivo Karlovic takes on Pablo Andujar while David Ferrer, who has a wild-card, will take on Sam Querrey.
