Novak Djokovic v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Djokovic leads 2-1. Fokina’s only win came on the clay courts of the Monte-Carlo Masters last season.

Djokovic Sends Fucsovics Packing

After having made a bit of a slow start, Djokovic came into his own and sealed his third round berth with a straight-set win over Marton Fucsovics.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner was on court for two hours and 47 minutes, as he carved out a 7-6 (2), 6-0, 6-3 win against his Hungarian opponent after having sent Alexander Kovacevic out.

Djokovic went up an early break but failed to serve out the set at 5-3 when he was broken by his opponent. He also had a set-point at 6-5 off Fucsovics’ serve but it too him a tie-breaker in the end to take the lead.

The second set was a straightforward one for Djokovic and despite losing his serve early in the third, he was off to a 5-2 lead in the third. Fucsovics put up a bit of a fight at that stage but the world number three came through without too much trouble after that.

The opponent quality could increase here but Djokovic looks to have regained a lot of his rhythm after his earlier issues during the clay swing which had seen him win only five of the eight matches he’d played in.

Fokina Gets His Act Against Van Assche

Luka Van Assche tried to put up a fight towards the end of his second round contest against Fokina but the Spaniard did not have to stay on court for longer than three for his second round victory.

Fokina took two hours and 38 minutes but faced just one break-point in the entire contest before winning 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (6). Van Assche did earn two set-points as well – one when he served at 5-4 in the third set and another in the following tie-breaker – but Fokina saved them both.

This follows an opening round win for Fokina against Arthur Fils in which he had been taken to four sets by the in-form Frenchman.

What’s interesting to note is that while Fokina has had an above-average season, there has been only one tournament in which he has won three successive matches in 2023. That came at the Indian Wells Masters.

It would need him to play out of his skin to try and replicate that here against Novak.

Djokovic v Fokina Prediction and Tip

Djokovic to win but there’s that possibility of Fokina probably snatching a set off him.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fokina to win a set: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Djokovic to win AND Over 31.5 games in the match: 21/20
