Alcaraz Trounces Shapovalov

World no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the fourth round with a straight sets drubbing of 26th seed Denis Shapovalov.

Playing in just his third French Open, the 20-year-old Spaniard will be making his second fourth round appearance at Roland Garros with hopes of at least matching his previous best, which was a quarterfinal appearance last year. But this year, Alcaraz is looking like a different player and he may go all the way to the title.

But he won’t be looking too far beyond just yet and focus on one match at a time.

In his most recent match against the Canadian left hander, Alcaraz dominated the first set, racing to a 5-0 lead before Shapovalov finally got on the board. He could win just one game as Alcaraz closed out the set in the next game.

In the second Shapovalov put up a strong show, building a 1-4 lead. But Alcaraz came from behind and won the last five games in a row to take a two-sets-to-love lead. He then controlled the second from the start to wrap up the contest 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

It was the second straight sets win for the Spaniard, who had begun with a 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Flavio Cobolli. Alcaraz surprisingly dropped a set in the second round though, but quickly took  charge of the match to beat Taro Daniel 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

With the three wins Alcaraz is now 33-3 for the season and 23-2 on clay.

Only once has the reignig U.S. Open champion lost before the semifinal stage this year and that was in Rome, when he went out in the third round. But that was just an aberration and normalcy has been restored in Roland Garros.

Musetti Eases Past Norrie

Lorenzo Musetti’s sublime form at the French Open continued as the Italian demolished 14th seed Cameron Norrie in straight sets on Friday.

Musetti needed just two hours and nine minutes to beat the Briton 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. The world no. 17=8 had 18 break point opportunities in the match and he converted six of them. In contrast, Norrie held just three break points and Musetti saved two of them.

Musetti also won 83% points on his first serve, stuck 24 winners and made just 23 unforced errors to Norrie’s 49.

Musetti is yet to drop a set in the tournament. He knocked out Mikel Ymer 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round and then demolished Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

In addition to winning all matches in straight sets, the 21-year-old has also been broken just thrice in the tournament, twice by Ymer and once by Norrie.

Musetti will be playing in the fourth round of the Paris major for the second time. He went down to Djokovic after taking a two-sets-to-love lead in 2021.

He is in brilliant form at the moment and has a 12-8 record on clay this season. Can he reach his first major quarterfinal on Sunday?

Alcaraz v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Both players are in brilliant touch at the moment and therefore this promises to be a cracking contest. However, Alcaraz is the superior player. While Musetti will come out all guns blazing, the Spaniard should be well prepared to fend off the Italian.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Alcaraz to win: 1/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 5/6
