There have been two previous meetings between these two and Paul has won both those hardcourt competition matches. Both in straight sets.

Paul Starts out at Career-Best Ranking

While clay has clearly never been Paul’s favourite surface, he ended the clay court season this year ranked 16th in the world – his career-best ranking.

And that is the kind of confidence he would like to take to the grass swing as he opens his account on this surface in a tournament he has never played before.

Paul hasn’t played a lot of tennis on grass incidentally. After registering his maiden match win on this surface in 2019 on the Challenger circuit, Paul finally clinched his first ever victory at the highest level last year.

He went on to achieve a lot more in the progress.

The American made the quarterfinals at both, the Queen’s Club Championships and the Eastbourne International before taking a step further to enter the fourth round at Wimbledon. Wins over Denis Shapovalov and Jannik Sinner in that period made for even more exciting viewing.

Paul will start out a huge favourite here.

Bonzi Hoping to Emulate Stuttgart 2022 Showing

Having made the quarterfinal at this tournament last season, Bonzi will hope to repeat that showing this season too. Especially given what followed in the rest of the grass court swing in 2022.

After that showing in this tournament, Bonzi had followed that up with a semifinal appearance at the Mallorca Open with a win over Shapovalov and another entry into the quarterfinals – this time in Newport. It had taken John Isner three tie-breakers to take Bonzi out.

What one needs to watch out is Bonzi’s fitness.

He had had to pull out from the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this season and has been out of action for two months as a result. We have seen how wrist injuries are typically a cause for big concerns and take their own time to heal and that’s one reason why Bonzi starts an outside 2/1 to clinch this.

Paul v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Given Paul’s grass form and Bonzi’s return from injury we will have to go with the American winning this in two.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Paul to win in straight sets: 11/10
  • Low Risk Tip: Under 0.5 tie-breakers in the match: 8/11
