Their only previous meeting came on the hardcourts of the Miami Masters where they had faced off in the qualifiers. Struff had won that match in straight sets.

Struff Hit Career-Best Ranking Recently
Not too many had expected Struff to have any kind of a renaissance during this year’s clay court swing after having hit a ranking of 167th in the world earlier this season.
Even when he scraped through the qualifiers at the Monte-Carlo Masters and defeated Alex de Minaur and two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud in that tournament, one could be excused for thinking it was one of those one-off set of results for Struff.
He made sure tennis fans knew it was no fluke at the Madrid Masters.
The German fell in the qualifiers in that tournament, qualified as a lucky loser and then went on a victory run that lasted six matches and included victories over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Aslan Karatsev on his way to the final.
And while Struff lost to Carlos Alcaraz, it wasn’t without a fight. He had also hit a career-best ranking of 26th in the world.
Struff will now hope he can do a better job of things on grass, having typically struggled on this surface and can overcome his opening round loss at the French Open.

Zhang Yet to Win a Main Draw Match on Grass
It’s only been two seasons of playing on grass for Zhang and he has featured in four tournaments without having won a single main draw encounter.
Two of those came on the Challenger circuit in which he won a round and the other two at Wimbledon 2021 and 2022. At the former, he managed to make it to the main draw before losing a tough battle to Antoine Hoang in the first round.
And then in 2022, Zhang failed to even make it to the main draw.
This time around, however, Zhang has risen 71st in the world rankings thanks to his quarterfinal appearance at the Madrid Masters and a third round showing at the French Open. This should given him direct entries into a host of tournaments, and as a result a better chance of pushing through the earlier rounds.
Especially against a player who has struggled to get going on grass.
Struff v Zhang Prediction and Tip
While Zhang is 2/1 to win this we won’t be discounting him given the way things have gone for the two players. Expecting him to put up a strong showing.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Zhang to win a set: 8/13
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 0.5 tie-breakers in the match: 10/11
